This question can seem a little weird, why not study. Well, there are a few reasons that could go on the against side, but let’s look at this with a little structure.

Previous Education and Work

I took some detours on my educational journey. After finishing the Gymnasium, German A-Levels, I went to study Computer Science at the university in Ulm. At the time I was not in the right mindset to live on my own, learn or even go to the lectures. This being said, I failed horribly and had to take a part-time job and start applying to apprenticeships.

I completed the apprenticeship to become a developer, which takes three years, with a system of school once a week and working the other four days. After this, I kept working for the same company as a full time developer and started earning some good money.

Work vs study

After some view months of working, I started to think about giving studying another try. But this time in dual fashion, which means that I study 3 months and work 3 months for 3 years while being paid monthly by the company I work for. However, there are several points to consider:

pro

  • proofing my self I can master the study
  • learn new stuff
  • get more proficient
  • better job perspectives

cons

  • less money
  • not that much more money with finished studies
  • learn for exams
  • having to repeat the basics for the 4 time

It would take many years to in a normal job to earn the money I ‘lose’ while not working full time and study. But in the end, the urge to get a bachelors degree and prove myself I can do it combined with the interest to keep learning new things won. Thus I am studying again and this time I have the right mindset, and it is going pretty well for now.

In Conclusion, every one has to decide for their own. In my opinion an apprenticeship is enough and depending on the job the pay does not differ that much. Make sure you have the right mindset before starting. And this applies to many things in life, not just the decision to study.
